Simple Patternmaking Tools to Begin Pattern Design

Do you need a lot of patternmaking tools to begin making your own sewing patterns?

Not at all!

People are often intimidated when they start a new project or hobby, fearing that the tools or equipment required will be expensive - and, all too soon, discarded.

How many of us have craft supplies, exercise equipment, or cooking tools that we bought with the best of intentions - only to have them collecting dust a few months later?  (I'm guilty of ALL of the above!!)

Well, then you'll be happy to know that the tools you need to begin making your own sewing patterns are simple, inexpensive, and readily available.

Sure, there are lots of gizmos and toys you can get if you really want to deck out your workspace.  But you don't have to - all you really need are a couple of specialty rulers.  That's it.  You probably already have everything else in your sewing space (paper and pencils, scissors and shears, fabric for mock-ups, etc.).

In this month's video, I go over the tools you need the things you don't need but might want, and whether or not you need a dress form.

As you can see, it doesn't take much to get started.

So, what are you waiting for?

Pick up a couple of rulers and a roll of craft paper and jump in!

On this page, I have more complete descriptions of these tools and supplies.  In most cases, I also have links to find them on Amazon, but most are also available at your local fabric store or sewing center.

Drafting Tools

You'll find a link for purchasing a dress form on the page above, and on this page, I also show you how to pad that form to replicate the size AND shape of your body.
